The figures can be found on the dashboard Zichtopvoertuigcriminaliteit.nl of the Vehicle Crime Insurance Agency (VbV). Of the 1,750 trucks that disappeared in 2024, 862 have been recovered.
Retrieve
The recovery rate for the number of stolen cars (6,495 in 2024) is also relatively high at almost 58 percent, but VbV director Edwin Karelsen is nevertheless worried. "Ten years ago, more than 10,000 cars were stolen. Since then, we have worked hard to reduce that number. In 2021, 'only' 5,897 disappeared, but since then that number has been rising again. We must therefore continue to take measures to prevent theft, but also to make detection easier. Both the car owner and the manufacturer. Together we can really make it a lot more difficult for thieves."
Engines
The theft category of motorcycles also shows an increase. In 2024, 1,877 motorcycles were stolen, compared to 1,799 in 2023. Of the 1,877, 560 have been recovered so far.
Mopeds
Only mopeds have decreased. After the 'record year' of 2015, in which no fewer than 13,696 mopeds, scooters and mopeds were stolen, there has been a decrease in the theft figures for three years in a row. "Moreover, we are increasingly able to find those vehicles. In 2015, the recovery rate was four percent, while it has been fluctuating around fifty for years now," says Karelsen, who expresses the hope that the number of stolen mopeds will fall below the 10,000 mark next year.
