The storm risk in the Netherlands can increase if the climate changes extremely and the global temperature rises by 4.5 °C. With a smaller temperature increase, the KNMI expects little change in the number of storms (wind force 9, 10 and 11) and the strength of storms. Tornadoes (wind gusts with a speed between 120 and 250 kilometers per hour) and hurricanes (wind force 12) are rare in the Netherlands. It is still uncertain whether the number of tornadoes and hurricanes will increase.
In the current climate, periods occur with a lot of extreme wind, interspersed with periods when it storms little. The greatest damage occurs during storms in summer and autumn. The trees are then full of leaves and catch a lot of wind.
