During hot summer days there is a chance of thunderstorms, especially if the humidity is also high. In the Netherlands, it averages 25 days per year. It most often thunders over the west of Brabant: an average of 34 times a year. The number of lightning discharges exceeds 200,000 annually. More than ninety percent of this takes place in the spring and summer months.
Due to climate change, the number of summer and tropical days is increasing. Thunderstorms will therefore occur more often. This increases the risk of lightning discharges and therefore damage due to lightning strikes. The warmer it gets, the greater that chance is: per degree of warming, the number of lightning discharges increases by 10 to 15 percent.
