Climate change is leading to more thunderstorms during hot summer days. There is a strong relationship between thunderstorms and hail. This hail, also called 'summer hail', consists of hard, massive and somewhat transparent ice clumps. In heavy showers, they can be more than 5 centimeters in size. This hail can cause a lot of damage, to buildings and greenhouses, cars or crops. The chance of extreme hail in the summer can double in thirty years, the KNMI expects.

In winter, hail pellets are often much smaller. They are white, transparent grains that contain a lot of air. However, this hail can also sometimes cause damage.
