Due to climate change, there is more rainfall and sea levels are rising. The Netherlands is well prepared for flooding. Riverbeds have been widened, the and the coast are constantly being reinforced. With this, we invest in flood prevention.

Nevertheless, due to the low elevation of large parts of the Netherlands, flooding remains possible. For example, after the overflow or breakage of due to extreme precipitation, or due to a large amount of meltwater or rainwater from abroad. Water can also flow in from the sea.

In the unlikely event of a flood, the Disaster Damage Compensation Act (Wts) can be declared applicable. In that case, individuals and companies, among others, may be eligible for compensation from the government for the damage suffered and the costs incurred as a result of a disaster.

However, on the basis of the Wts, full compensation is never awarded. There are also conditions attached to it, such as: there is a disaster as referred to in Article 1 of the Security Regions Act, and: the damage is uninsurable, unavoidable and non-recoverable.

Local Flood Advisory Report 2018

It may differ per insurer whether – and how – they follow this advice. We update the information on this website based on market developments around this advice.
